The DeBlois Gallery, Newport, will host an exhibit of work of three of its artist members during the month of September. The show, simply entitled "Recent Work", will feature new work completed by Felicia Touhey, Jonathan Small and Kathleen Armor. Their work offers a glimpse into the thoughtful and reflective, as well as the creative, natures of the artists.
Many of the encaustics created by Felicia Touhey will feature shadowy figures and familiar shapes in very new combinations. As she explains, "I realize now that I have been creating windows and shadows in my work since college. Hence, the title 'Reflections'. I have been doing a lot of thinking about all that I have done before and am now just realizing that I keep coming back to several recurring shapes and ideas".
Jonathan Small's oil paintings demonstrate both exceptional skill and artistic talent. Yet, at the same time, some of the works also reveal the artist's subtle sense of humor. In describing his current work, Small states, "I've been taking a closer look at my surroundings. Everything in the paintings was found within the confines of my home. Some I've painted just as I've found them ('la verite en peinture'). Others I've arranged into compositions I find interesting. If we open our eyes we find so many things worthy of our attention."
Sculptor Kathleen Armor finds that the repetitive nature of the act of stone carving is most conducive to a sort of active meditation. "I've found many 'life lessons' in the stone", Armor states. "While working on these pieces, I've spent some time thinking about past choices made ... the things that help determine the course of your life. I've recalled the 'roads not taken'. Undoubtedly, this led to a greater focus on the 'negative shapes' evident in many of these current pieces."
The public is cordially invited to attend an Opening Reception on Saturday, September 3rd from 5-7pm. to meet the artists and to view their new series of works. "Recent Works" may be viewed at the DeBlois Gallery from September 3rd through September 25th. DeBlois Gallery, located at 138 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, is open Tuesday through Sunday, 12-5pm. For more information, please visit the website at www.debloisgallery.com or call 847-9977.

New work created by three well-known, local atrists, Judy Chaves, Lisa May and Tom Martinelli, will be featured at the DeBlois Gallery during July. Creative styles that we have come to recognize from the talented threesome will certainly be evident. In addition, however, the show promises to include work which ventures into new areas of artistic exploration as the three continue to push the limits of their development as artists. Although she certainly will exhibit both the oils and encaustics that have become her hallmark, Judy Chaves continues to experiment in new directions. In reference to her growth as an artist, she states, "The anticipation of creating art is always inspiring. Pushing myself in many media is both exciting and painful. I love the experience of the process and the silence within." Sculptor Lisa May has earned widespread recognition for her cast paper sculptures. Through her work, she strives to achieve a balance between Asian and Western cultures and between fantasy and reality. Of her work, which is both functional and decorative, she explains."Fusion is what these cast paper pieces are about." Tom Martinelli enjoys exploring new approaches, processes and materials when creating his mixed-media works. According to Martinelli, "Though I work quite deliberately, employing both traditional and innovative techniques, I approach each piece of work with my fingers crossed wishing for a successful outcome. I am often surprised at the shapes and forms that begin to appear in my work. I am always happy to be introduced to them. I strive to make sense visually, and hope the poetry will follow."
For an inspirational evening and an opportunity to meet the artists and to view their new work, plan to attend the Opening Reception on Saturday, July 2nd from 5-7 pm. This innovative show will be featured at the DeBlois Gallery from July 2nd through July 31st. DeBlois Gallery, located at 138 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, is open Tuesday through Sunday, 12-5pm. Art lovers often view a work and wonder how the artist managed to achieve his intended result. The new show at DeBlois Gallery, Newport, promises to offer some insight into the processes utilized by three prominent artists. The show, entitled "Pattern and Process", features the work of Thomas Ladd, Yvonne Leonard and Erika Sabel.
Studio potter and ceramic sculptor Thomas Ladd has worked professionally with clay for the past thirty-five years, has exhibited widely and has won many awards for his work. For this show, Ladd will display his hand-thrown and altered utilitarian ceramic vessels. In discussing his work, Ladd states,"Stoneware encapsulates the hand and heart of the potter. Exploring the parameters of material, process, surface, form and space is an endless learning challenge. Complete dedication and a strong technical foundation are necessary to produce works of significance." Yvonne Leonard combines her extensive background in printmaking with both drawing and painting to create the work that she will exhibit. She utilizes multiple copper or zinc plates and complex etching and printing processes which culminate in her printing on a variety of materials, including found text. Brooklyn artist Erika Sabel utilizes paint and line to fill the canvas with complex visual layers. She will exhibit both paintings and drawings in the show. As the artist explains,
"For me, line embodies decisiveness, control and confidence - whether it is blunt or forgiving - it contains the same power. Painting is freedom and trust, a sense of spontaneity and risk. Marriage between two different techniques - painting and drawing - are inversely proportional in my work. I cannot stop drawing, but I really want to paint."
An Opening Reception to meet the artists and to learn more about their work and their creative processes will be held on Saturday, June 4th from 5-7pm. The public is invited to attend. "Pattern and Process" will be featured at the DeBlois Gallery from June 4th through June 26th. DeBlois Gallery, located at 138 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, is open Tuesday through Sunday, 12-5pm. For more information, please visit the website at www.debloisgallery.com or call 847-9977.

Wrapped Up in Wire
Kicking off the Summer 2011 Newport Gallery Night Series, CADEAUX du MONDE will feature a demonstration of creating jewelry with wire from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on June 9 by award winning Newport jeweler and ceramic sculptor, Nina Pfanstiehl. Nina will discuss wire wrapping, demonstrate how to create tight spirals and will share information on design ideas, tips, techniques and tools to create original wire wrapped jewelry. Nina's new 2011 jewelry and ceramic sculpture will be featured and are currently on display in CADEAUX du MONDE's Galerie Escalier.
After graduating Summa cum Laude with a double major in Art and English Literature, Nina worked for Monopearl, a costume jewelry manufacturer whose clients included Trifari and Monet, and her designs were a part of their season line-ups. In addition, she has studied with a number of silversmiths and jewelry artists in RI and FL, working with wire throughout the last 10 years. A frequent exhibitor at area galleries and museums in both juried and invitational shows over the last several years, Nina's works have consistently won awards and her sculpture "African Princess" was accepted for inclusion in Lark Books 2011 publication "500 Raku".

Count Us In
May 7 – May31, 2011
Plein Air and Studio Paintings by the Sunday Morning Painters
“Count Us In” featuring artists Margot Grosvenor, Holly Grosvenor and Terry Grosvenor will be exhibiting this May at Spring Bull Gallery. These women painters of the Grosvenor family bring another facet to an illustrious artistic family. The three stand strong as painters in their own right and are not to be intimidated by anyone. Come and meet these women painters at an opening reception Saturday, May 7, 2011 from 5-7 pm.
Margot Grosvenor has had a career in nursing and real estate besides raising four children and being active in many community organizations and non-profit boards. She still finds time, with the encouragement of her husband artist Richard Grosvenor, to enjoy putting pencil & paint to paper & canvas. Margot notes that despite painting together with her husband she faces another direction to maintain her independence and a different view.
Holly Grosvenor, a noted architect with the Newport Collaborative firm, grew up surrounded by art and architecture. She has used her natural talents throughout her career winning several design competitions. An enthusiastic proponent of painting outdoors, like the other women in this exhibit, she captures local scenes in oils and watercolors. Her work strives to capture the moment of time with intense color, texture and quality of light.
Terry, a Grosvenor by marriage, is part of a fourth generation of her Navy family to chose Newport as home. An Art History Major, she has focused on musical as well as visual endeavors. Dante's Links of Love
Continuing the Spring 2011 Newport Gallery Night Series, CADEAUX du MONDE will feature Newport artist Kristin Dyer's new line of chainmaille jewelry and other chainmaille creations--Dante's Links of Love. In addition, Kristin will be demonstrating how to create chainmaille jewelry in ongoing informal gallery demonstrations from 5:00 until 8:00 in the evening of April 14th .
Kristin decided to create and sell this new line of chainmaille, Dante's Links of Love, to help raise awareness for Autism in honor of her son, Dante who was diagnosed with autism 2 years ago necessitating that Kristin become a stay at home mother. Currently, 1 in every 110 children born is diagnosed with some form of autism. Kristin will be donating a portion of all profits to several different autism foundations including The Autism Project of RI and AutismSpeaks.org. She knows that these children need a voice and that more awareness about autism will ensure a bright future for these children.
Born and raised in Rochester, MA, Kristin learned leather work and jewelry making from her mother at a young age. Branching out into other types of handcraft such as beading and macrame on her own, she was an accomplished beader at the age of 11. While in high school here in Newport, she became enchanted with chainmaille and decided that this style of handcraft was truly her niche. Now more than a decade later of continually creating unique chainmaille jewelry, she continues to develop and design new patterns and designs--many of which will be on display and available at the gallery for April's Newport Gallery Night.

The art of encaustic painting is more than 2500 years old and, although it has enjoyed increasing popularity in recent years, many are still unfamiliar with this ancient medium. The term encaustic is derived from Greek meaning "to burn in" which refers to the process of using heat to fuse the beeswax based paint. A new show at the DeBlois Gallery, Newport, will demonstrate the versatility of this medium in its contemporary applications. The exhibit, entitled "Hot Wax", will feature the work of prominent Newport artist Virginia Purviance along with that of twelve other local artists. These twelve, each accomplished in a variety of other mediums, have chosen to study the art of encaustic painting under the tutelage of Felicia Touhey who has taught for many years throughout the area. These other exhibitors include: Kathleen Armor, Diana Bardorf, Judy Chaves, Helen Hadley, Suzanne Hauerstein, Susan Kieronski, Kathleen Morton, Sandi O'Brien, Valorie Sheehan, Felicia Touhey and Helen Woodhouse. Members of the group continue to meet on a frequent basis to explore the endless possibilities that encaustic painting offers. The resulting show, although unified by its common medium, is amazingly diverse in both technique and artistic style. Purviance, who often incorporates found objects into her work, explains "Encaustics are the perfect medium for me. Painting, layering, incising, scraping back, dipping into luscious pigment and molten wax combines my love of collage with the senses of touch, sight and smell...". Similar feelings are echoed by several of the other exhibitors including Susan Kieronski who states, "Recently, though, I've had the occasion to explore the medium of encaustic. The lush layering, the incorporation of found objects and images, and the act of manipulating a melting medium have been a new and inspiring way to continue to explore my natural subject matter." Those who would like to learn more about the art of encaustic painting are invited to attend an informative demonstration presented by exhibitor Kathleen Morton which will be held on Gallery Night, Thursday, April 14th at 6:00 pm at the gallery.
"Hot Wax" will be featured at the DeBlois Gallery from April 2nd through May 1st. The public is invited to attend an Opening Reception to view the work and to meet the artists on Saturday, April 2nd from 5-7 pm.

It's been a long, hard winter and, according to the calendar, it's not over yet! Is it any wonder that we are eagerly seeking signs of the kinder, gentler season that lies ahead? For the Newport arts community, anticipation of the upcoming exhibition season offers that promise. Keeping with their long-standing tradition, the DeBlois Gallery again marks the beginning of their new exhibition season by hosting their annual Spring Open Show. This year's event, entitled "Figure This...." promises to amaze with diverse, original interpretations of this limitless theme. Of course, images of the human form quickly come to mind. However, puzzles, numbers, mysteries and ambiguities, both visual and verbal, will surely be represented. For many years, artists throughout the state have enthusiastically anticipated this annual event as a way for participants to celebrate their creativity and skills, both through their interpretation of the theme and the execution of their work. This year's show runs from March 5th through March 26th. The public is cordially invited to join the celebration and attend the Opening Reception on Saturday, March 5th from 5-7 pm.
DeBlois Gallery, located at 138 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, is open Tuesday through Sunday, 12-5 pm. For more information, please visit the website at www.debloisgallery.com or call 847-9977.

Stroll through elegant galleries of changing exhibitions in the Newport Art Museum’s John N.A. Griswold House (1864) and Cushing Memorial Gallery (1920.) Griswold House, a National Historic Landmark, was designed by Richard Morris Hunt in the Stick-Style of architecture and is one of the few surviving examples of his early domestic work. The quiet classical details of the Cushing Gallery, designed by William Adams Delano, contrast with the slate roof, gables, and cross pieces of Griswold House. The Museum’s three-building campus also includes the Coleman Center for Creative Studies, housed in the Gilbert S. Kahn Building. The Newport Art Museum is located in Newport’s Old Quarter at 76 Bellevue Avenue. Parking is available in Museum lots off Old Beach Road and off Downing Street.
Three exhibitions of contemporary art open in January at the Newport Art Museum. “William Klenk: Collage Paintings” opens on January 8 and runs through March 13, 2011. Klenk’s painterly collages “connect us to our world in a different way than painting does. Collage uses actual material from our lives – bits of signs, posters and letters – and combines them in a way that transforms the elements into something else,” says the artist. Klenk has taught drawing and painting at the University of Rhode Island for five decades.
“Marian O’Connell: Artist Books and Etchings” opens on January 15 and runs through March 20, 2011. Marian O’Connell’s exquisite intaglio prints are inspired by things she loves: New England flowers, gardens and architecture. O’Connell’s hand-painted accordion book Walls, Gates and Fences, 2008 won “Best in Show” and the “Newport Art Museum Award” in the 2009 Newport Annual Members’ Juried Exhibition, the Rhode Island’s largest and most comprehensive exhibition of regional contemporary art.
Also opening this month on January 29 is the “The Art of Architecture and Design,” featuring work, documents and objects contributed by Newport Architectural Forum members.
