Bannister’s Wharf is proud to announce “Wall Jewelry” an upcoming exhibition of Toas Artist Thom Wheeler. Thom’s career began many years ago in Houston. When he first started out he worked primarily in stone and wood. He then came up with an idea of making metal bases to support the pieces. People liked his style and encouraged him to combine wood with metal to create monumental size sculptures. His materials are highly polished and textured metals brass, copper and aluminum set with ivory, wood, cast glass, stag horn and stone such as turquoise, and jasper. His tools include the band saw, lathe, drill press, kilns, welding machines, buffers and sanders. Thom has gained recognition for his religious themed art. His knowledge and fascination with history and a variety of religions have taken him in various directions. He enjoys mixing Southwest motifs of Native American beliefs with those of other religions to cast a more modern approach on how we view religion in our lives. A Celtic cross can have a Zuni bear embedded in the middle. Anything is possible. There is also the galleries on going exhibit by local artists:

Photographer Ron Caplain and assemblage artist Karen Nash will once again combine their talents in their new exhibit at DeBlois Gallery during May. The show, which focuses on several Gay parades, is entitled "Shine on My Parade". It is a prelude to Gay Pride Month which is traditionally celebrated in June. These two accomplished artist members of DeBlois Gallery have exhibited together on several occasions, but their focus on this theme as a joint venture is a first for them.
Ron Caplain is best known in photographic circles for his outstanding street art images. He views the street itself as a blank canvas while people, objects, shadows and reflections become artistic elements in the creation of his work. With years of street photography experience to his credit, Caplain began photographing gay parades in 1999. As he relates, "I began just looking for a new project, but after the first parade I found this to be a great experience. Ten years ago gay people were first coming out and this was the only chance for them to express themselves without ridicule. Now it is different and it is an event that is fun to photograph. Being a street photographer, it is sometimes difficult to take pictures of people, but at the gay parade everyone wants their pictures taken, are willing to pose, and act, and enjoy themselves. It is the latter that I have tried to capture."
Karen Nash is a sculptor and assemblage artist who utilizes recycled and found objects in the creation of her art. When Caplain invited her to join him in this exhibit, he offered her a large bag of parade memorabilia as inspiration. As she explains, "While Ron's photography distills very complex moments into a perfect single image, I needed to figure out how to work with a crazy-quilt of colorful little objects and make them cohesive. Before long, I realized that the objects were symbolic of some very big themes that needed to be communicated. These are: gender identity; personal and civil safety; recognition and respect; family/marriage rights; self-respect and self-esteem; and personhood - being LGBT is integral to a person, but does not define that person. These are profoundly serious themes dressed up brightly for a parade, and accordingly, I am viewing them as divisions of a parade." Her work for this show will feature a large installation that will to be both eye-catching and thought-provoking.
"Shine on My Parade" , which runs from May 4th through May 26th, promises to hold more than a few surprises! The public is invited to attend an Opening Reception to meet the artist and to view their work on Saturday, May 4 from 5-7pm. DeBlois Gallery, located at 138 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, is open Tuesday through Sunday, 12-5pm. For more information, please visit the website at www.debloisgallery.com or call 847-9977.

"Deep Woods", an exhibit of the works of Robert Sabin and Eleanor Sabin, will be featured at the DeBlois Gallery during the month of April. This show marks the first time that this talented father/daughter duo has publicly exhibited their work together. And, while their mediums and styles differ greatly, the viewer is certain to enjoy discovering the common thread which underlies both artists' work.
After a long career as a commercial artist and educator, Robert Sabin sought an opportunity to "open the door" to his own ideas through his art. As he states, "In the 'real' world there is always more to learn to see. I'm forever trying to understand the patterns of how the world expresses itself." His paintings in this exhibit are the result of his self-imposed challenge. In discussing this body of work, Sabin explains, "A number of the images are derived from dreams, but most of the paintings start out as single images around which visual and symbolic content condenses, seemingly by coincidence. The most successful paintings take on a life of their own, acquire a narrative and emotional resonance."
Bob's daughter, Eleanor, is a very accomplished artist in her own right. Her most recent award is Best in Show, the Maxwell Mays Award from the Providence Art Club, in their current National All Media Juried Exhibition for her pen and ink diptych called "Augery". For her part in the "Deep Woods" exhibit, Eleanor has created numerous pen and ink drawings as well as 3D works. As she states, "The pen and ink drawings presented in this show represent a body of work based on the theme of modern ruins … pen and ink is often considered a medium of the past, and reminds me of all things antique. Using this medium to portray modern ruins conveys a sense of conceptual, historical and anachronistic weight."
While Eleanor's detailed pen and ink drawings offer stark contrast to her father's liberal use of color in his dream inspired paintings, the viewer may note that the two artists have more than lineage in common. As Eleanor explains, "My Dad and I both love the woods, especially the areas less travelled … the title of the show, "Deep Woods", acts as a metaphor for the conceptual and creative rabbit hole you can fall into while working on a series of artwork - one idea leads to another, and then another, like following a trail of breadcrumbs into the deep woods where larger and more secret ideas may lie."
The public is invited to join this father/daughter duo in commemorating their first joint exhibition and to view their work at an Opening Reception on Saturday, April 6th from 5-7 pm. "Deep Woods" may be viewed at DeBlois Gallery fro April 6th through April 30th. DeBlois Gallery, located at 138 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, is open Tuesday through Sunday, 12-5pm.
