Images of Africa

Continuing the 10th Anniversary Summer Newport Gallery Night Series, CADEAUX du MONDE will host an opening reception from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm in the evening of July 8, 2010 for a new exhibit of charcoal and pen & ink drawings "Images of Africa" by two emerging artists from Zimbabwe, Freedom Mandundo and Moses Chirimutah, both current members of The Art Corner Studio, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The exhibit will continue throughout the Summer 2010 Season.

Born in 1989 in Kadoma, Zimbabwe, Freedom Mandundo completed his education at Victoria Falls and joined the cooperative art group, Art Corner Studio. He has spent the past six years working with and being inspired by other artists in the group, namely Larry Norton and Craig Bone. His love for the African bush veld has inspired him to experiment with pencils to capture the beauty of black and white color.

Moses Chirimutah, born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, is the youngest of six boys and the son of the late Mark Chirimutah, pastor of the Church of Christ. After completing school in 2002, he decided to take up art full time with the encouragement of Sanele Dhlomo, an artist and curator at the Art Corner Studio, Victoria Falls. Striving to achieve photo realism in his work depicting lanscapes, wildlife and local people, his preferred mediums are pencils and colored pencils.

Located in Newport at 26 Mary Street, CADEAUX du MONDE's main gallery features fairly traded international folk art and Galerie Escalier, the former servants' staircase, showcases local artists' works on a rotating basis. Harbor Fine Art

Harbor Fine Art Welcomes Cindy Baron
Location: Harbor Fine Art
Event Dates: 7/8/2010 - 8/1/2010
Reception: Thurs. July 8th 2010 • 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm

“Art has always been a part of my life and the landscape has been a constant study for me. I’m drawn to vistas that show strength and peacefulness like the shoreline and the mountains.

My oils and watercolors are far from traditional teachings. My approach is unusual but ending results are spiritual. One might say I’m a tonalist painter, but I would describe myself as a blended traditionalist. My oils and watercolors reflect a visual softness with an earthy realism. My palette holds the paint but the blending of color takes place on canvas. Harmony of color and shape are achieved through a spontaneous yet controlled manner.

I want the viewer to be captured immediately and on closer observation be able to walk through the painting as if they were there themselves. Art is a blessing. When honed, studied and desired, it is a gift you are able to give to others..”

Cindy Baron Has recently received top 50 honors at the Salon International, was juried into the Oil Painter's of America National Exhibition, and she is a Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society.

DeBlois Gallery

"Paper and Paint, at the DeBlois Gallery during the month of July, features the work of three very talented artists, Lisa May, Doreen Dunham and Ellen Schillace. Simply stated, the participating artists have utilized the most basic of materials, paper and paint, as their materials of choice to create work for their show of the same name. The resulting collection of contemporary paintings and paper sculpture are refreshingly unique.
Papermaker Lisa May's work ranges from decorative to functional. Her three dimensional work is formed entirely of cast paper. When referring to her work, May states that she is "attracted to the manipulative aspects of the medium and its creative and functional possibilities combining color and shape as well as texture".
The works that painter Doreen Dunham has chosen to exhibit reflect her passion for a bold palette and manipulation of forms. Her contemporary figures demand attention through their vibrant colors and strong shapes that convey a bit of whimsy.
In contrast to Dunham's work, painter Ellen Schillace intuitively developed her signature style in black and white. According to the artist, "those images were primitive at times and not identifiable at times in any measure of gender, race or culture". The layering of color yielded her ancestor series and other work that she will exhibit in this show. This body of work speaks to the connection that she feels to her family and those who came before her. When referring to one of her works entitled "Water Life", Schillace states, "This painting has taken on the voice of our connection to each other and to the natural world."
"Paper and Paint" demonstrates how ordinary materials can sometimes yield extraordinary work. The public is cordially invited to view the work and to meet the artists at their Opening Reception which will be held on Saturday, July 3rd from 5-7pm. The show runs from July 3rd through August 1st.

Deblois Gallery

The advent of summer brings with it a relaxed and refreshing lifestyle that puts us more in touch with the world around us. "Summer Lights", showing during the month of June at the DeBlois Gallery, Newport, features the works of three talented artists which reflects the joys of this long-awaited season. Each of the artists, Michael Guertin, Elena Obelenus and Jennifer Teichman have created a unique body of work that draws from the inspiration that they have found in this special time of year.

To say that internationally exhibited artist Michael Guertin is a photographer would not be telling the entire story. He does, in fact, utilize his photographs in the creation of his highly imaginative images of which he says "...reveal the world not so much as it is, but as it could be seen....This collection of work is certainly colorful; color contrasts and color harmonies have been carefully coordinated for each image. Expect to see a lot of green, gold, blue and aqua; summer colors, happy colors. And there's a lot of repetition, most of it naturally derived from the repeating elements of nature." Guertin will include images representing several series of his work in the show. As he explains, one group, the Wave Scan Series, "...reveals the rhythmic structure of waves over time, each similar to the preceding one, but also strikingly different." In characterizing his work generally, Guertin adds, "These compositions exist somewhere between the world of photography and that of painting and, you will see, they are quite unlike either. They are dramatic. They are dynamic. Above all else they are likely to bring a smile to your face and to give you more than a moment's reflection in their viewing."

Clay artist Elena Obelenus has chosen to display a collection of her elegant porcelain pieces for this show. Once having formed a vessel, she uses its surface as a canvas for her striking designs. As the artist explains, her creative process allows her "...to explore my everyday surroundings and the many patterns and textures that emerge in nature. The perfect curve of the nautilus shell, the fine veins of a leaf the irregular texture of the bark of a tree and the endless motifs found in nature provide infinite inspiration."

Jennifer Teichman states that her paintings "express both the raw beauty of costal living as well as my fascination with personality and faces." She goes on to state that summer environments provide her with inspiration because "... this is the most luxurious, and least introspective, time of life - a respite from desperation and anxiety". While noting that her paintings have an "illustrative quality", she explains that her goal is to"... create fields of color that dance against one another, the way that light dances across one's face when reflected from water."

Although they utilize different media and vastly different styles, these three artists have combined their talents and efforts to produce a show that is both cohesive and complimentary. The DeBlois Gallery cordially invites the public to attend an opening reception to meet the artists and to view their work on Saturday, June 5th from 5-7pm. "Summer Lights" will run from June 5th through June 27th.

NEWPORT, RI: Newport photographer Jason Evans shines a spotlight on the Aquidneck Island (Newport) surfing scene in “SURF ISLAND: A Ride with Newport's Surf Community,” a new exhibition opening on Saturday, June 5 at the Newport Art Museum. Evans portrays the hardy, passionate, sometimes edgy corps of surfers who persevere for the love of the sport through all kinds of bad weather and less-than-perfect conditions in this corner of New England. “SURF ISLAND” runs through September 6, 2010. The Museum hosts a reception for its summer exhibitions on Friday, June 18, 5 – 7 pm, 76 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island. The reception is free for Museum members; $10 for non-members.

Evans grew up “landlocked” and didn’t discover surfing until he moved to Newport four years ago. The sport quickly became a passion. Evans writes, “I started the ‘Surf Island’ project as a way to explore surfing through a different channel and record what I saw along the way.” As he worked on the project, Evans gained new appreciation for “the tight social network that makes up Aquidneck Island's surf community and all of its great personalities, surfers and beautiful seascapes.” His images capture the excitement of the ride and the devotion of those who seek it.

Evans says, “The competitiveness and strong territoriality” that sometimes go along with surfing seemed to wane as he worked toward capturing what he observed. Through the “Surf Island” exhibition, Evans “hopes to share 'the stoke' of what a great ride can bring and inspire others to spread it.”

Evans has been involved in commercial and editorial photography since 1997, specializing in sports photography and was one of only five photographers chosen by the International Olympic Committee to photograph the Olympic Games in Vancouver. He has traveled extensively for work and pleasure and has set a goal for himself to travel to a different country every year. So far the thirty-four year old Evans has visited 31 countries.

ASSOCIATED PROGRAM: The Newport Art Museum is inviting members of the public to submit their own images of surfing-inspired artworks to “Surf! Surf! Surf!” – an online exhibition running in a virtual gallery accessible through the Museum’s page on Facebook. Images will be displayed online in July and August. A juror will select five finalists and then the Museum’s Facebook fans will vote to determine an overall winner. The winning entry will be exhibited on the Museum’s website and at the Museum’s art school, the Coleman Center for Creative Studies in the Gilbert S. Kahn Building. “Surf! Surf! Surf!” opens in the virtual gallery on July 1, 2010.
